Description
This is a large-scale rewrite of the script for Final Fantasy VI, based on the live translation stream featured on the Legends of Localization website, with additional material referenced from kWhazit. The game’s dialog has been thoroughly reworked in order to accurately convey the story as conceived by its original writers, with particular emphasis placed on being readable and natural in the English language. The initial SNES version of the game from 1994 had a surprising number of translation errors, and while later releases sought to correct these issues, they also tended to introduce new errors and other oddities in the process. The goal of this rewrite is to strip away the confusion about what actually happens in the plot of this game and why, yielding a version that is faithful to the story and character details conceived by the developers at Square. While previous releases of this project retained some of the ‘flavor text’ from the SNES version, in its current incarnation it elects to do away with such alterations and return to the original dialog. It also changes the names of certain characters back to either their original forms or the nearest phonetic equivalents, and completely removes the misleading and inaccurately-translated term ‘Magitek’ from the game altogether. More detail about this decision is provided in the readme file. The character of Cayenn has been rewritten most extensively of all, in order to present a consistent and believable representation of archaic speech. A great deal of research was done on Early Modern English to achieve this goal. He has been written to be easily understandable despite the grammatical differences, but additional documentation has been provided about the nuances of the style in order to clarify any potentially confusing elements. This version also features extended name lengths for items and abilities, eliminating the need to use awkward abbreviations, and gives the player the ability to quickly swap between the Equip and Relic screens by pressing the Y button. A large number of bug fixes are also included. To play this version, apply the .bps patch to an unaltered and un-headered rom of Final Fantasy III (USA) v1.0. It is compatible with real SNES hardware as well as emulators.
