Description
An authentic SNES “Chrono Trigger” experience — but refined, uncensored, updated, and fixed! “Chrono Trigger: Refined” is a purist-friendly improvement patch that aims to create the ideal vanilla version of the game. Originally conceived as an addendum to the “Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch” by Chronosplit, it has since evolved—with Chronosplit’s blessing—into a fully standalone refinement project. The guiding vision is to bring the SNES version of “Chrono Trigger” closer to the standard established by the Nintendo DS release—while preserving the charm and liveliness of Ted Woolsey’s original localization. This patch corrects lingering script issues, aligns terminology with the DS version, refines tech descriptions, and fixes flawed battle messages and item descriptions. The patch features the following content: Script Refinement Mistranslated or misleading lines in Ted Woolsey’s script have been corrected. Spelling, grammar, consistency, and continuity errors have been fixed. Naming conventions, use of singular and plural, abbreviations, and capitalization have been made more consistent. Some overly anachronistic or real-world-referencing Woolseyisms have been toned down. References to alcohol, death, prayer, and more… suggestive moments have been restored. Mystics have been renamed to “Fiends”; human NPCs in 1000 A.D. and 600 A.D. now consistently refer to Magus as “The Fiendlord.” Miscellaneous dialogue fixes and restorations from “Bugfix and Uncensoring” have been carried over. Terminology Update The names of techs, items, monsters, locations, eras, and chapters have been updated to match the terminology used in the Nintendo DS release. In cases where SNES space limitations prevented a 1:1 adoption of DS terms, shorter alternatives, synonyms, or original SNES names were used to avoid distracting abbreviations. All dialogue, battle messages, and item descriptions that mention these terms have been updated accordingly. Tech Description Refinement Tech descriptions have been rewritten from the ground up to match the level of clarity found in the DS version. Each description now states the correct attack pattern and element. Flaws present even in the DS version (such as incorrect or missing attack patterns or incorrect healing values) have been fixed. Battle Message Refinement Battle messages have been reworked to be closer to the DS version. Mistranslated or misleading battle messages have been corrected. Item Description Refinement Item descriptions have been reworked to be closer to the DS version. Flawed item descriptions have been corrected. Fixes Fixes from “Bugfix and Uncensoring” have been carried over. The Unsightly Pixel fix by Gi Nattak has been incorporated. Please note: Save files from the unpatched, original version might not be compatible. This patch features the CronoNick fix, which allows Ayla to give Crono a special nickname. Old saves without the CronoNick fix will cause glitches. To be safe, make sure to create a new save file! This hack does not alter gameplay, balance, or story events (except for bugfixes, restorations, and uncensoring)! If you prefer the original SNES translation over the DS retranslation, but want its quality improved and its many flaws fixed, then this is the version for you. Hopefully, it brings you joy and offers a great reason to revisit one of the best JRPGs of all time! To submit feedback, or to report bugs, join the discussion topic. The “Refined” series aims to provide official-feeling, purist-friendly revisions of classic games through text refinement, fixes, and carefully selected improvements.
